Swing or sliding? Choosing electric gates in Yorkshire
Swing gates suit wide openings with room to arc; sliding gates suit short, tight or sloping drives; bi-folding suits speed and security. Here is how the three compare for homes in Yorkshire, with 2026 fitted prices for each.

Swing gates: £1,200 to £2,500 to automate
The classic choice for wide or farm-style entrances. Ram arms are the budget kit; underground motors cost more (mostly groundwork and drainage) but vanish from view. The gates need room to swing clear of the drive and any public footway, and safety edges where they arc over shared space.

Sliding gates: £1,500 to £3,000 to automate
The leaf runs sideways on a track or, better, on cantilever rollers, so there is no ground track to clog and no swing arc needed: cars can park right up to the line. The trade-off is run-back space beside the gate, roughly the leaf width plus a margin. Ideal for short drives and sloping plots.
Bi-folding gates: £3,500 to £8,000
Fabricated aluminium leaves that fold and clear the opening in three to five seconds, with no swing arc and no ground track. The premium buys speed, security and a low visual profile: the usual pick for high-security residential jobs.
The Yorkshire verdict
Wide opening, gates you love, budget in mind: automate the swing gates you have. Short, tight or sloping drive: sliding, and cantilever if the ground is uneven. Speed, security and no compromises on space: bi-folding. Whichever you pick, get it itemised and quoted free through the form.
Gate products are covered by BS EN 13241 and safe installation by BS EN 12453: the BSI knowledge page sets out the product standard, and HSE publishes safety guidance for powered gates.
