Automated gate safety: what BS EN 13241 requires in Yorkshire
An automated gate is machinery at the boundary of a home, and the UK safety framework for it is real: BS EN 13241 (the product standard) and BS EN 12453 (safe use) set out forces, protection and installation requirements. Here is what they mean for a Yorkshire installation, in plain English.
Last updated: September 2026.
What the standards actually require
BS EN 13241 covers the product itself: gates and their automation must be designed, built and marked against it. BS EN 12453 covers safety in use: protection points, force limits, and how the gate must behave when it meets an obstruction. A compliant installation satisfies both, and the installer should say so in writing.

Force testing, in plain English
Forces are measured with a calibrated meter at the most hazardous points of the gate travel, against the limits in BS EN 12453. On a swing gate with no other protection, the main leading edge is limited to 1,400 N dynamic force, and tighter limits apply where people can be caught between fixed parts. Forces drift as hinges wear, which is why the test is repeated at every service.
What a safe installation includes
Photocells across the opening, safety edges on crush points, force limitation set and measured, manual release accessible, warning markings, and a documented handover. Industry bodies such as Gate Safe and the Door & Hardware Federation publish checklists worth reading before you sign anything.
Questions to ask any Yorkshire installer
Ask for the force test result in writing, the names of the motor and panel, which protection devices are fitted and where, and who holds the CE/UKCA declaration for the combined installation. Any quote worth accepting answers all four without hesitation.
